Cardiovascular Disease: Common Treatments

Cardiovascular disease is a term that refers to multiple conditions relating to the heart. Some of the most common cardiovascular diseases include congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, congenital heart disease, peripheral artery disease, and stroke. Because there are a number of cardiovascular diseases, it can be challenging to know what type of treatment is necessary. Cardiologists use a number of methods to tackle the disease at hand. Read on to learn more about the most common treatments.

Treating cardiovascular disease

Outlined below are some of the most common ways to treat cardiovascular diseases. Review this information when looking into all of the existing treatment options.

Lifestyle changes

Individuals that have early-onset cardiovascular diseases may respond well to lifestyle changes. Oftentimes, problems with the heart and arteries occur because of poor health. As a result of poor health, cardiologists may recommend a few changes in day to day habits. Outlined below are a few lifestyle changes that are commonly advised.

  • Eating a healthy diet rich in vegetables, protein, and calcium
  • Exercising for at least 30 minutes a day
  • Avoiding foods that are high in sodium, fat, and sugar
  • Quitting smoking
  • Limiting if not eliminating alcohol consumption
  • Drinking a lot of water every day

While lifestyle changes may not seem drastic enough, they are often extremely helpful for the disease at hand. Cardiologists will evaluate the individual's current lifestyle to determine where changes need to be made.

Medications

If the cardiovascular disease is not responding to lifestyle changes then the next recommendation would be medications. There are a number of medications that can be prescribed depending on the patient's disease, genetics, preference, and symptoms. Outlined below are some of the most common medications.

  • Beta-blockers
  • ACE inhibitors
  • Antiplatelet drugs
  • Clot busters
  • Nitrates
  • Blood thinners
  • Calcium channel blockers
  • Angiotensin II receptor blockers

Surgery or procedures

The most extreme type of treatment for cardiovascular disease is a medical procedure or surgery. Although this is used as a last resort, the results are typically very positive. Outlined below are some of the most common medical procedures performed to treat cardiovascular diseases.

  • Pacemaker placement is done to help the heart to maintain a rhythmic rate
  • Heart transplants replace the diseased heart with a healthy one
  • Cardioversion address arrhythmias
  • Bypass surgery for the heart helps to unblock clogged arteries
  • Angioplasty is minimally invasive and opens blocked arteries
  • The placement of a left ventricle assist device helps to pump blood that is rich in oxygen throughout the body
