Health Conditions That a Heart Specialist Can Treat

A heart specialist, also called a cardiologist, is a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the cardiovascular system, which covers the heart, arteries and veins. A heart specialist can perform necessary tests and procedures for patients suffering from heart-related conditions.

Conditions treated by the heart specialist

The heart specialist can diagnose, treat and prevent different types of cardiovascular conditions. Conditions include the following.

Congestive heart failure

The heart ventricles are responsible for supplying blood throughout the body to deliver needed oxygen. When the heart is weak and unable to meet up with the body’s demands, the condition is called congestive heart failure. This may cause blood to fill the abdomen, lungs, liver and lower body.

Coronary artery disease

Plaque can sometimes accumulate inside the artery walls of the heart. This condition is called coronary artery disease. The plaque consists of cholesterol and fat and can adhere to the arterial walls and restrict the flow of blood to the heart. Coronary heart disease can cause heart attacks. Several factors contribute to the condition, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, genetics, smoking, diabetes, age and obesity.

Irregular heartbeat

An irregular heartbeat, called arrhythmia, occurs when there is an issue with the rhythm or rate of the heart. An irregular heartbeat can lead to a fluttering sensation in the chest, difficulty breathing, a racing heartbeat, chest pain, fainting or dizziness.

Heart arrhythmia can occur in different forms. The heart may beat abnormally fast (tachycardia), abnormally slow (bradycardia) or in an irregular pattern. The causes of arrhythmia vary, but it is mostly due to abnormalities or disruptions in the electrical channels that set the heart’s pace or rhythm.

Heart valve disease

The heart consists of four chambers that transfer blood through the heart and to the rest of the body. Every heart chamber has a valve that aids the proper flow of blood in the right direction. Heart valve disease occurs when one or more of the valves fail to open or close normally.

Heart valve disease may occur in two ways: stenosis and regurgitation. Stenosis occurs when the heart valve opens narrowly, limiting the quantity of blood that can pass through the valve. Regurgitation is when a heart valve fails to close fully, causing blood to flow backward into the heart chamber. Heart valve conditions have many health consequences and usually require surgery.

Pericarditis

This is the swelling and inflammation of the pericardium, the thin membrane that forms a sac around the heart muscles. Patients may experience sharp, acute pain when the inflamed areas of the pericardium rub over each other.

Congenital heart disease: Almost 1% of all babies delivered in the United States have a heart defect at birth. This is usually caused by malformation of the heart structure, and treatment usually requires corrective measures.

In conclusion

A heart specialist can treat these conditions using different forms of treatment, ranging from medications to diet management, therapies and weight loss recommendations. In severe cases, they might recommend heart surgery.
